Known as\u00a0<strong>Sanci\u2019s Tropical Foods<\/strong>\u00a0at 66 Kensington Avenue, Sanci\u2019s was the first non-Jewish merchant in the market \u2013 he moved to Toronto from Sicily in 1914.<a href=\"https:\/\/kmhs.ca\/footnotes\/kensingtons-ever-shifting-population\/?preview_id=433&amp;preview_nonce=7cc60ef841&amp;preview=true#_edn4\">[iv]<\/a>\u00a0As his family\u2019s business moved into the wholesale market, and small businesses became obsolete, it was proposed to Borg and his family that they branch out from bananas and start receiving mangoes shipped in from Jamaica. He accepted this change, and spurred on by a growing Jamaican presence in the market and Toronto in general, his family stopped selling wholesale bananas altogether in 1962.<a href=\"https:\/\/kmhs.ca\/footnotes\/kensingtons-ever-shifting-population\/?preview_id=433&amp;preview_nonce=7cc60ef841&amp;preview=true#_edn5\">[v]<\/a>\u00a0This shift in both consumer and product is an important part of this moment in Kensington Market\u2019s history, as the Market would continuously experience these shifts and changes throughout the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, and into the 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frances Borg&#8217;s father, Salvatore Sanci opened a banana store in 1928.
